Falling in Love with the Philippines and BGC

BGC Taguig, Philippines

I’ve been going back and forth from the Philippines for a while now. Every time I would come back, I fell in love with it a little bit more every time. Now that I’ve been living in the Philippines for a few years, it has been a great adventure. There is definitely a great difference between coming to visit the Philippines and being based here full time. While I’ve been able to discover great new places to eat, drink, and shop at, I’ve also discovered some great places and things to do that you can check out for free.

Bonifacio Global City, or more commonly known as BGC, is a great modern playground of a city in the Philippines. It’s one of the perfect places to explore whether or not you are in a spending mood. The things that you can do here for free are a mix of leisure, physical activity, art appreciation, and mall hopping.

10 Free Things to Do in BGC

Photoshoot Around the Photogenic City

Every spot of BGC is Instagram worthy. When I first filmed the video that inspired this post, my friend and I walked around BGC for around 8 hours just to film and each spot was picture perfect. BGC may be an urban city but there is so much about it that is alive. There is a vibrant energy coursing through the buildings that captures well into photos.

Watch this and be inspired

Chill at Burgos Circle Park

One of the Instagram worthy spots in BGC is the park in the middle of Burgos Circle. In the middle of a roundabout surrounded by high quality bars and restaurants is a patch of green. This park brings nature back to the urban city. It’s a great spot to chill with your family, friends, and pets. Enjoy your day on one of their many benches and appreciate the large sculpture in the center of the park. You can even bring food here and enjoy your day while having a little snack.

Visit High Street Flea Markets

On the weekends or holidays, you can usually find a flea market style setup in BGC. When we went during the filming of the video this article is based on, the stalls were mostly focused on pottery and plants. On the weekends, they usually close 5th Avenue in BGC to make more room for various stalls that sell food, clothes, accessories, and many other kinds of things! Since this is a list of free things to do in BGC though, you’ll probably just be visiting and looking, not buying (if you can stop yourself). The closing of the street also allows skateboarders to roll down the street, everyone makes use of the closed street for different activities like rollerblading as well.

Discover All the Murals and Art Around the City

Like I said earlier, BGC is a vibrant city and one of the things that makes it so alive is the scattered artworks around its buildings. You don’t need to go to a museum (and possibly pay an entrance fee) to see some beautiful art. BGC itself is an expansive canvas that various artists have had the honor of painting on. Try to discover each mural and artwork by exploring every nook and cranny of the city. See some good art and get a free workout in at the same time!

Window Shopping Around the Entire High Street

More than just the flea markets that come and go, the entire BGC High Street is filled with some famous international and local brands. As you window shop you may also discover some great brands that you maybe haven’t heard about, but if they are in BGC High Street then you already know that they are a high quality brand with great products to offer.

Take a Walking (and Phone) Break by Central Square Mall

Outside of Central Square Mall in BGC, there is a raised platform and benches where people tend to sit and chill. While this is a great spot to rest after a full day of walking around, pro tip that this is also a great spot to access free wifi in the area. Take a load off and catch up on your phone notifications for a moment, upload those photos that you took around BGC, and then continue on your BGC adventure!

Bike Around BGC

BGC is very pedestrian and biker friendly. They have very clear bike lanes around the city and various bike stands for when you need to park your bicycle. If you don’t have your own bike, another popular activity that people partake of in the city is to rent the different bikes and scooters that are scattered around BGC. Although, renting one of these is not free and would cost you some money.

Do a Lap Around Track 30th

As someone who has already been living in the Philippines for a while, it’s nice to still be surprised by it sometimes. I didn’t know that there was a place like Track 30th in BGC. It is another one of their many great parks, but this one has a nice and smooth running track. Track 30th was made to keep residents healthy, active, and fit. It’s great to go for a run with greenery around you even when you are in the city. Another great feature of this park is that if you aren’t in the mood to do a running/walking lap then you can workout on the lawns around it and even do some yoga and meditation.

Take Your Pet Up to the SM Aura Sky Park

For all the fur parents out there, why not try bringing your pets to the SM Aura Sky Park. There are a lot of obstacles around that are sure to excite all your little pets. Since this is one of the more popular pet parks in the area, you can also socialize with other pet owners while your dogs run around and enjoy themselves to the max. And even if you don’t have a pet and just love animals, this is also a great spot to see some adorable cuties!

Explore All the Malls

While you’re at SM Aura, might as well take a look around! There are so many malls around the BGC area that you can spend a whole day just going through them all. The malls around this area are quite big with different features setting them apart from each other. I even have a vlog where I explore the malls around the area from the more affordable options to the luxury malls. Check out the full video here. Some of the malls in the area that you can explore are SM Aura, Market Market, Uptown Mall, Fiesta Market, Bonifacio Stopover, Venice Grand Canal Mall, One Bonifacio, and Central Square. Take note of all things that catch your eye and think about whether or not you’ll be coming back to them with cash in hand.
