Introduction
El Nido Palawan, Philippines
More than 7,000 Islands Waiting for You
The Philippines is an archipelago made up of more than 7,000 islands. This means that there are so many wonderful sights for you to explore and discover. The Philippines has so much to offer. For Ave who grew up here, the Philippines is a place that she can always call home. It is filled with people that she loves, and just a few days back here from traveling is enough to rejuvenate her.
I’ve been around the world and I’ve seen a variety of climates, cultures, and people. When I first came to the Philippines it was easy to see how special it was in terms of its activities, scenery, food, and, of course, its people. Filipino hospitality is one of the warmest feelings ever, people here are kind and generous. I feel incredibly lucky to call the Philippines my current home.
After all the time I’ve spent here, I was able to create a list of the top 10 places in the Philippines that everyone should visit. These 10 places should definitely be on more people’s radar, whether you are a foreigner looking for an out of country adventure or a Filipino looking to get to know their wonderful country deeper. Most of the places that I mention are easily accessible through a flight.

Top 10 Spots in the Philippines
This list is in ascending order, so make sure to read till the very end to see my #1 must visit spot in the Philippines. And without further ado, here are the top 10 places you need to see at least once in the Philippines.
10. Dumaguete and Apo Island
Located in Negros Oriental, Dumagete is known for its laid-back vibe, beautiful beaches, and abundant activities. We were lucky enough ourselves to be able to catch a sight of some playful dolphins during our visit here. I lived in Hawaii for 2 and a half years and wasn’t able to see anything like that there, so to catch a glimpse of dolphins in Dumaguete was a really special experience for me. The beauty of Dumaguete is so relaxing that it is actually quite a popular spot for foreigners to retire to. Another part of why they come would definitely be the food. Make sure to dig into their incredibly fresh seafood served straight from the sea, and of course no Filipino meal would be complete without a big serving of rice!
Drive up the coast and take a boat to Apo Island. If you are a diver or snorkeling enthusiast, you’ll love swimming around this island’s waters. Under the water are vibrant coral reefs with diverse marine life. You’ll definitely feel like a mermaid swimming around the thriving aquatic life, including adorable sea turtles!

9. Siquijor
A medium-sized island in Central Visayas, Siquijor will blow you away with its inspiring scenery and endless activities. Rent a scooter and drive around the island to discover its gorgeous beaches, fish ponds, cliff diving spots, and waterfalls. It amazed me as an island that truly has everything. The moment we got off the boat from Dumaguete, we were greeted with white sand and crystal clear water which tempted me to immediately jump in and swim. Some of its most famous spots are the Cambugahay Falls which almost feels like a giant playground and Paliton Beach which is sometimes referred to as “Little Boracay” since the sand almost resembles the powder soft sand of Boracay’s shores.
Siquijor is a great spot for adventure and relaxation. Salagdoong Beach is a popular spot for cliff diving but you can also just lay back and sunbathe on the lovely sand. Siquijor is also referred to by the locals as the “Enchanted Island” giving it a hint of magic swimming in the air. When we went, we took the unique opportunity of visiting a local medicine man sometimes referred to as an “albularyo” of “folk doctor”. He was even able to predict our futures, and I was glad to hear that I’m perfectly healthy!

8. Biri
In 2020, we decided to celebrate Ave’s birthday on Biri island, and I ended up falling completely in love with the place. From lush mangroves, looming rock formations, and hilltop sunsets that were out of this world – this island exceeded our expectations so much that we decided to extend our stay here. Biri Island is such a unique place in the Philippines from its scenery even down to their motorcycles. The locals on the island have a special way of extending their motorcycles so the guides were able to bring us around the island comfortably.
If you make your way here, you should definitely check out the Magasang Rock Formations which were shaped by the tides and winds over millions of years. Nature’s very own staircase leads you up to an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean. The sunset experience on this island was an unforgettable experience.

7. Donsol
Donsol is home to one of the most incredible experiences possible - swimming with the whale sharks. The whale sharks, locally known as butanding, are gentle giants that can grow up to be around 18 meters in length, making them the largest fish in the world! More than just getting a chance to encounter one of these magnificent creatures up close, you can also rest assured knowing that you are doing this in an eco-friendly manner. Even though you aren’t guaranteed a butanding sighting, you should still take the chance because if you are lucky enough it will definitely be worth it! Make sure to come around March-May for a higher chance of seeing the butandings.
I also highly recommend that you take the 1 hour boat ride to Ticao, Masbate to catch a glimpse of a one of a kind waterfall that I have yet to see anywhere else in the Philippines. This waterfall is free hanging and falls straight into the ocean. The spot is surreal, making it hard to believe that this is something real right in front of you instead of some computer generated image!

6. Gubat, Sorsogon
Gubat feels like an incredibly underrated spot in the Philippines. It reminded me of North Shore, Hawaii with its laid back but still exciting energy. It offers some great surfing spots, a view of a massive volcano, charming local boutique hotels, and the Philippines’ highest inland lake.
At Bulusan Lake, you can rent a stand up paddleboard, kayak, or boat to go around the great lake. Breathe in deeply as you paddle by indigenous flowers. We also had a great island hopping experience here where we stopped by a thriving fish sanctuary and the incredibly peaceful Subic Beach. More than the beach, the local community definitely adds to the charm of this place with roosters crowing and smiling children running around.
You’ll love this one, come watch.
5. Gigantes Islands
You shouldn’t think twice about making your way over to the Gigantes Islands. Located just off Panay Island in the Western Visayas, these islands are as stunning as any dream destination in the world. These islands may be considered the Maldives of the Philippines with their striking blue water and soft white sand beaches. Relax on the pristine beach or take part in exciting activities like jet skiing or banana boating,
If you’re a fan of seafood then you’ll be in (scallop) heaven here. I was even surprised to discover that along with all the seafood, you can also buy an ice cold beer by the secluded beach. Our island hopping tour here is probably one of the best island hopping tours that I’ve ever done in the Philippines. There are also glamping areas here where you can experience the best of nature in luxury with family or friends.

4. Antique
Another spot in the Philippines that reminds me of Hawaii, Antique exudes Oahu vibes with its tropical weather and almost daily rainbows. Antique is filled with endless stretches of beach, mountain hikes, cave explorations, and peaceful spots like the Tibiao River. One of the most spectacular things we did here was a guided boat tour to the island of Malalison. Once you reach this spot and turn around to look at Antique and the looming Mt. Madja-as, you remember how small you are (in the best way possible)! To this day, that scenery and moment is still clear in my mind as one of the best views I’ve ever seen in the Philippines.

Antique is also home to the unique kawa bath experience. Said to lower levels of stress and strain on the body, the idea is to use a large iron pan which was originally used for sugar and basically turn it into a hot tub. I felt like I was being cooked into Norwegian bulalo while I steeped in the water. We tried the couple sized tub and Ave and I both didn’t expect it to feel as effective and relaxing as it did once we came out of the tub. You should definitely place the kawa bath high up on your itinerary if you plan to visit Antique.

3. Southern Cebu
Southern Cebu is home to some of the coolest waterfall adventures that I've ever experienced in the world. Some of the most iconic falls in the area are the Kawasan Falls, Aguinid Falls, and Tumalog Falls. We also had lots of fun in the bright blue waters of the Ambakan Falls which has around 9 levels to it. When we visited these falls we were able to reach the 9th level, but of course you don’t have to make it all the way to the top. Don’t worry because your guides will really take care of you. If you are feeling extra adventurous you can even go canyoneering here which is a great group activity to do with your family and/or friends to get all your blood pumping.
This place is also special to me personally because this is where I had my first meet and greet which was really cool but also really shocking. Ave and I weren’t expecting many people to arrive but suddenly there were more than a hundred people present and we even needed to be escorted by some security. It just goes to show how big the Marvekada is and we love each and every one of you!

2. Siargao
In the northeast corner of Mindanao you’ll find the 437 square kilometer teardrop shaped island that is Siargao. Siargao easily became one of my favorite places on earth. It is a very special spot for Ave and I because it is where we spent most of the quarantine lockdown during the height of the pandemic and it was also where I proposed to her!
Siargao continues to grow into a digital nomad’s paradise. Known for its youthful energy and vibrant atmosphere, Siargao offers countless restaurants and bars - its nightlife scene is lively no matter what day of the week it is. General Luna has become a hotspot for people around the world to come together in search of a bit of island living (and partying). Even with this wild side, exploring the peaceful agricultural side of Siargao is also equally as exciting. It is always a privilege to be able to eat fresh food and see where the food you are eating grew from.
Island hopping to the nearby islands is always a great idea, but you can also rent a motorbike or scooter and spend the day driving around the island, soaking in its breathtaking views at your own pace. There are many unique ways to experience Siargao. Whether you’re looking to surf, explore some sea to summit hikes, or just enjoy the chill tropical vibes, Siargao is a place that will cast a spell on you to either keep extending your stay on the island or constantly come back for more.

1. El Nido to Coron
I’ve definitely saved the best for last with this 2 in 1 adventure. Make your way from one gorgeous spot in Palawan to another must see beautiful spot, and enjoy every second of the immaculate tropical ride along the way. Grab some besties and fly into El Nido from Manila and spend some time on its relaxing sand. El Nido is famous for its grand island hopping packages, but there are also a lot of other things to do here as well. After some time in El Nido, hop on a boat to discover the untouched beauty of the Linapacan area where only licensed operators are allowed to pass through, ensuring that these areas stay clean and tranquil. Dive in the crystal clear waters, relax on the smooth soft white sand, and camp in secluded islands - you’ll almost feel like you have all these different islands to yourself.
Once you arrive at Coron I suggest you take around 4-5 days to explore the island. Dive into its stunning lakes and lagoons, and enjoy the local fish that are cooked right on your boats. Coron has a bunch of great eateries, cozy coffee shops, and plenty to do when you feel like moving about after beach bumming. I sincerely hope that you add this adventure into your bucket list because it is definitely one of the coolest things I have ever done throughout my many years of traveling.

Quick Tips
Are you excited to book your trip to one of these wonderful locations? Here are some tips you might want to take note off before you make your way over to any of these great spots. These tips may be useful most especially if it is your first time going to the Philippines.
Keep Your Change
While parts of the Philippines function on a cashless basis, some of the more lowkey spots mentioned here deal with cash transactions. More than just having cash on hand, try your best to have some small bills too in case whoever you are paying is unable to give you any change.
Take Care of Your Tummy
If you are a foreigner visiting the Philippines, you might want to stick with drinking bottled water or bring your own water jug with clean water. Sometimes the service water in some restaurants comes straight from the tap which may affect people with more sensitive tummies.
Always be Prepared
The Philippines is a tropical island which means that the sun here can be a bit unforgiving sometimes. Don’t forget to pack tons of sunscreen, a cap, and some sunglasses. Another way that you can make sure you are prepared when you travel is by updating your travel insurance. Ave and I have been full time digital nomads for a while now, and when you’re constantly on the go, sometimes life can be unpredictable. SafetyWing has given us important peace of mind with its different travel insurance packages, giving us a greater sense of security so that we can continue to travel and explore with ease.
CLAYGO [Clay As You Go ]
Cleaning up after yourself should always be a rule you follow no matter where you go. Throw your trash in the proper place or keep it with you until you can throw it out. These places are all beautiful and we should keep it that way so that other visitors and future generations can enjoy them as we do. Being respectful to the environment also includes being respectful to the locals, they were kind enough to let us visit their beautiful homes so let us show them the respect that they deserve.
Manila Layover
In between your adventuring across the many islands of the Philippines, you’ll likely find yourself in Manila waiting to catch a flight. Why not consider spending a couple of days here as well. Manila is definitely a spot in the Philippines that you shouldn’t ignore. Check out this 5 day itinerary that we cooked up for a taste of the different sights and activities that you can do in the Capital of the Philippines.
